Former CCI Chairman Dhanendra Kumar Passes Away

¨     Dhanendra Kumar, former Chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), died on 28 May 2026 following a fire at his residence in Hauz Khas Enclave, South Delhi.

¨     He was a retired 1968-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Haryana cadre.

¨     He also served as Executive Director at the World Bank.

¨     The Competition Commission of India is a statutory body established under the Competition Act, 2002.

¨     It became operational in 2009 and regulates anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position, and combinations in the Indian market.

¨     The fire broke out late on 27 May 2026 in a three-storey house in Hauz Khas Enclave, South Delhi.

¨     Police received an emergency call at approximately 11:18 PM.

¨     The blaze was brought under control by about 12:20 AM with the assistance of residents, police personnel, and two fire tenders.

¨     Preliminary investigations linked the fire to the indoor unit of an air-conditioner located in a ground-floor room.

¨     Officials have found no evidence of foul play or conspiracy in the incident so far.

¨     Dhanendra Kumar was admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre around midnight after suffering severe smoke inhalation.

¨     He died at 7:50 AM on 28 May 2026.

¨     His son, Gourav Kumar, suffered smoke inhalation while attempting to rescue him and remained in stable condition under treatment.

¨     Five people were present in the house at the time of the incident, including Dhanendra Kumar, his wife Manju, his son, and two domestic helpers.
