Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $230 million loan agreement

¨     The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $230 million loan agreement on 21 August 2026.

¨     The loan is for the Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project.

¨     The project aims to strengthen water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the Greater Chennai area.

¨     It is expected to benefit around 4.5 million people.

¨     The project will construct more than 170 km of water supply and sewer pipelines.

¨     It includes the upgradation of 7 water pumping stations in Chennai.

¨     38 sewer pumping stations will also be upgraded.

¨     The loan agreement was signed by Saurabh Singh, Deputy Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, on behalf of India.

¨     Mio Oka, Country Director, India Resident Mission of ADB, signed the agreement on behalf of ADB.

¨     ADB approved the project on 3 July 2026.

¨     Chennai will become the first city in India to implement a closed-loop ring-main system for water supply.

¨     The system will help balance water pressure across the water supply network.

¨     It will also improve the resilience of the water network against natural hazards.

¨     The project includes digital monitoring of water and sewer networks.

¨     Mechanised equipment will be used for sewer inspection.

¨     The project focuses on improving water security, climate resilience and sanitation infrastructure in Chennai.
