• ¨   Government of India announced 1,057 Gallantry and Service Medals for personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and correctional services on the eve of the 80th Independence Day.

    ¨     The medals are administered under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

    ¨     A total of 301 Medals for Gallantry were awarded in 2026.

    ¨     Of these, 272 medals were awarded to police personnel and 29 medals to fire service personnel.

    ¨     197 Gallantry Medals were awarded to personnel deployed in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas.

    ¨     51 medals were awarded to personnel serving in Jammu and Kashmir.

    ¨     12 medals were awarded to personnel from the North-East region.

    ¨     41 medals went to personnel serving in other regions.

    ¨     Chhattisgarh Police received the highest number of Gallantry Medals, with 141 awards.

    ¨     Jammu and Kashmir Police received 38 Gallantry Medals.

    ¨     Telangana Police received 15 Gallantry Medals.

    ¨     Three junior commandos from Telangana who were honoured were B. Sathya Rao, K. Sandeep Kumar and J. Vamshi Krishna.

    ¨ The Medal for Gallantry (GM) is awarded for exceptional courage in saving lives or property, preventing crimes, or apprehending offenders.

    ¨    The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is awarded for distinguished and outstanding service.
