India and Mauritius signed a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the oil and gas sector in Port Louis

¨     India and Mauritius signed a Government-to-Government (G2G) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the oil and gas sector in Port Louis on 20 August 2026.

¨     The agreement was signed by Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and John Michaël Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen, Mauritius Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection.

¨     The MoU aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector and deepen energy ties between India and Mauritius.

¨     A Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement is a formal arrangement between two sovereign countries for cooperation in a specific sector.

¨     Port Louis is the capital and largest city of Mauritius, an island nation located in the Indian Ocean.

¨     Mauritius has significant dependence on imported petroleum products for transportation, electricity generation and marine fuel requirements.

¨     Alongside the G2G MoU, Indian Oil Corporation (IndianOil) and the State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius signed a five-year Sales and Purchase Agreement.

¨     The agreement provides for the supply of petrol, diesel, Marine Gas Oil and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to Mauritius.

¨     Indian Oil Corporation is a major Indian public-sector undertaking operating in the downstream petroleum sector.

¨     The State Trading Corporation of Mauritius is a state-owned trading organisation responsible for imports and commercial supply arrangements in Mauritius.

¨     Hardeep Singh Puri also held discussions with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Port Louis.

¨     The discussions focused on energy resilience and bilateral strategic relations between India and Mauritius.

¨     Energy resilience refers to a country’s ability to maintain a stable and reliable fuel supply during disruptions in international energy markets.

¨     The agreement follows an announcement made by S. Jaishankar at the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Port Louis on 9 April 2026.

¨     The Indian Ocean Conference is a regional platform that brings together countries from the Indian Ocean region for discussions on regional cooperation and policy issues.

¨     The agreement is expected to strengthen Mauritius’s energy security, ensure reliable petroleum supplies and deepen India-Mauritius strategic and economic cooperation.
