India and Sweden formally upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership

¨ India and Sweden formally upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership on 17 May 2026.

¨     The announcement was made during talks held in Gothenburg between Narendra Modi and Ulf Kristersson.

¨  The new strategic partnership places strong emphasis on green transition, security, emerging technologies, trade, investment, and strengthening people-to-people ties.

The partnership is built on four key pillars

1.     Strategic dialogue for sustainability and security

2.     Next-generation economic partnership

3.     Emerging technologies and trusted connectivity

4. “Shaping Tomorrow Together” focusing on people, environment, health, and resilience

Both countries also released the India–Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026–2030.This plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap for cooperation in political, economic, technological, security, and climate-related areas.Green transition has been identified as a core area of collaboration.Sweden is a global leader in environmental protection and green technology, while India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity.The partnership also includes cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and trusted digital connectivity.This collaboration is expected to give a new direction to technological innovation and digital cooperation between the two countries.
