India recorded more than five lakh organ donation pledges through voluntary registration for organ and tissue donation

¨     India recorded more than five lakh organ donation pledges through voluntary registration for organ and tissue donation.

¨     The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and coordinates organ donation and transplantation activities across India.

¨     Organ donation in India is governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994.

¨     The Act provides the legal framework for the removal, storage, and transplantation of human organs and tissues.

¨     It covers both living organ donation and deceased organ donation, along with the donation of tissues such as corneas, skin, and bones.

¨     In 2023, NOTTO launched the Aadhaar-based online pledge portal (notto.abdm.gov.in) for organ donation registration.

¨     Public awareness has also been promoted through Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.

¨     As of March 2026, nearly 90,000 patients were on the national organ transplant waiting list.

¨     Deceased donor transplants accounted for about 18% of all organ transplants in India.

¨     India performed around 20,000 organ transplants in 2025, compared with fewer than 5,000 transplants in 2013.
