India successfully concluded its Eighth Trade Policy Review (TPR) at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva

¨     India successfully concluded its Eighth Trade Policy Review (TPR) at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva on 24 July 2026.

¨     The review sessions were held on 21 July and 23 July 2026.

¨     The review covered India's trade policies for the period 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025.

¨     The Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM) is one of the three core functions of the WTO, along with trade negotiations and dispute settlement.

¨     It periodically examines the trade and trade-related policies of WTO members to promote transparency.

¨     India is a founding member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which came into force on 1 January 1995.

¨     Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal led the Indian delegation during the review.

¨     India received 1,094 written questions from 44 WTO member countries.

¨     68 WTO members made interventions during the two review sessions.

¨     WTO members welcomed India's acceptance of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, adopted at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) in June 2022.

¨     Discussions highlighted India's progress in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

¨     Members also reviewed India's initiatives in customs modernisation and trade facilitation.

¨     The integration of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) into Global Value Chains (GVCs) was another major area of discussion.

¨     Some WTO members expressed concerns regarding the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.

¨     Issues related to tariff levels, Quality Control Orders (QCOs), import substitution policies, and the frequent use of trade remedies were also discussed during the review.
