¨     India-born Ghazala Hashmi has created history by getting elected as Virginia’s first South Asian American and Indian-origin woman Lieutenant Governor.

¨     The Democrat won the election against Republican candidate John Reid.

¨     Six years ago, Hashmi had also made history by becoming the first Muslim woman to serve in the Virginia State Senate.

¨     Hashmi will now take over from Republican Winsome Earle-Sears.

¨     Earle-Sears was the first woman to hold the position of Lieutenant Governor.

¨     Hashmi was born Malakpet area of Hyderabad and moved to the United States when she was four years old.
