Ghazala Hashmi has created history by getting elected as Virginia’s first South
Asian American and Indian-origin woman Lieutenant Governor.
¨ The Democrat won the election against
Republican candidate John Reid.
¨ Six years ago, Hashmi had also made history
by becoming the first Muslim woman to serve in the Virginia State Senate.
¨ Hashmi will now take over from Republican
Winsome Earle-Sears.
¨ Earle-Sears was the first woman to hold the
position of Lieutenant Governor.

Hashmi
was born Malakpet area of Hyderabad and moved to the United States when she was
four years old.
