Indian playback singer and Padma Vibhushan recipient Asha Bhosle passed away

¨     Indian playback singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Asha Bhosle passed away on 12 April, 2025 in Mumbai at the age of 92.

¨     Asha Bhosle was considered one of the greatest singers of modern Indian music, whose career spanned several decades.

¨     Due to her widespread presence in Bollywood, the hit song 'Brimful of Asha' was released in 1997, which was a tribute to her.

¨    For decades, she remained one of the most sought-after playback singers and worked with leading music composers across the industry.

¨     Her most popular songs include 'Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar', 'In Aankhon Ki Masti', 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai', 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja', 'Duniya Mein Logon Ko', and 'Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main'.

¨     She was honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2000 and was also nominated twice for the Grammy Awards.

Life introduction of Asha Bhosle

¨     Raised in a music-filled environment under the guidance of her actor and classical singer father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, Asha began her musical journey at a very young age; she sang her first song in 1943 for the Marathi film 'Majha Bal'.

¨     Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs in various Indian languages and lent her voice to many leading actresses—from Meena Kumari, Madhubala, and Zeenat Aman to Kajol, Urmila Matondkar, and South Indian actresses such as Padmini and Vyjayanthimala.

¨     She was born on 8 September 1933 in a music-loving family. Her four siblings also went on to become well-known singers and musicians. Her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar was a singer who was revered as the “Nightingale of India”.

¨     Bhosle carved her own distinct path in the music world, quite different from her sister Lata Mangeshkar; Lata Mangeshkar passed away in 2022.

International career of Asha Bhosle

¨     She collaborated with several international pop artists; in the early 1990-91 period, she worked with British artist Boy George and recorded a song with Michael Stipe of the band R.E.M.

¨     In 1997, the band ‘Cornershop’ created the song ‘Brimful of Asha’ as a tribute to her.

¨  In the song 'The Shadowy Light', her remarkable voice was blended with a multicultural musical group; it depicts a sailor guiding a soul across unknown waters, reflecting themes of death and the afterlife.

¨     In one of her last recordings, she collaborated with the British virtual band 'Gorillaz' for their 2026 album 'The Mountain'; the album’s theme is based on grief, mortality, and spiritual transformation.

¨     In 2007, her collaboration with Australian cricketer Brett Lee was a fun moment when they teamed up for the song 'You Are the One for Me', which was featured during the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

¨     Apart from music, she was also fond of food. Following this passion, she started a chain of restaurants named ‘Asha’ in Dubai and the United Kingdom.
