India’s Index of Core Industries (ICI) recorded a 5% year-on-year growth in June 2026

¨     India’s Index of Core Industries (ICI) recorded a 5% year-on-year growth in June 2026.

¨     The provisional estimates were released by the Office of Economic Adviser (OEA) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

¨     The Government has introduced a new ICI series with 2022–23 as the base year, replacing 2011–12.

¨     The revised series incorporates several methodological improvements.

¨     Iron Ore has been included as a core industry for the first time.

¨     As a result, the number of core industries has increased from eight to nine.

¨     The Index of Core Industries (ICI) is a monthly index that measures the production performance of India's major core industries.

¨     These industries provide essential inputs for manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, and other economic activities.

¨     The ICI serves as a leading indicator of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and overall industrial growth.

¨     The revision of the base year reflects the current structure of India's industrial economy, technological advancements, and changes in production patterns.

¨     The revised ICI series is available retrospectively from April 2023.

¨     The updated series will help analysts and policymakers assess industrial trends more accurately using the revised methodology.
