Jaipur Among the World's Best Cultural Cities

Jaipur has secured the 18th spot globally in 'Time Out's' list of the 'Best Cities for Art and Culture in 2026,' making it the highest-ranked Indian city on the list. Global Ranking: London topped the 2026 rankings, followed by Paris, New York City, Berlin, and Cape Town; Jaipur's inclusion in the global top 20 reflects its growing international reputation as a cultural destination. Ranking Methodology: The rankings were based on a survey of over 24,000 residents across more than 150 cities, combined with insights from Time Out editors and cultural experts. A key criterion was that only the highest-ranked city from each country would be included in the list.

¨     Introduction: Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and part of the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur "Golden Triangle." Founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, it is considered one of India's earliest planned cities.

¨     Planned 'Pink City': Its layout was designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya based on the principles of traditional *Vastu Shastra*. The city was divided into nine blocks and painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, earning it the moniker 'Pink City.'

¨     Architectural Heritage: Jaipur is renowned for its forts, palaces, and monuments—including the Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Amer Fort, Jal Mahal, Nahargarh Fort, Jaigarh Fort, and Jantar Mantar—all of which showcase its royal and scientific heritage.

¨     UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 2019, the ‘Walled City’ of Jaipur was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it stands as an outstanding example of 18th-century planned urban architecture.

¨     Management: It is managed under various frameworks—such as the Conservation Management Plan (CMP), the Integrated Management Plan, and state-level heritage regulations—which include provisions regarding building façade controls, height restrictions, color uniformity, and signage standards.

¨     Vibrancy of the Cultural Calendar: Jaipur’s global identity is further reinforced by events and performances such as the Jaipur Literature Festival, Jaipur Art Week, and “The Manganiyar Seduction,” which showcase Rajasthan’s rich folk traditions and cultural diversity.
