Killai in Cuddalore district became Tamil Nadu's first fully operational Climate Resilient Village

¨     Killai in Cuddalore district became Tamil Nadu's first fully operational Climate Resilient Village on 22 July 2026.

¨     The project was implemented under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission of the Department of Environment and Climate Change.

¨     It focuses on ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, and community-led climate action.

¨     The Climate Resilient Villages Programme is a flagship initiative of the Tamil Nadu Government launched in 2022–23.

¨     The programme covers 11 villages across 11 districts, with Killai being the first to implement the complete framework.

¨     It addresses climate-related risks such as cyclones, sea-level rise, saline intrusion, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss.

¨     The programme also promotes sustainable livelihoods for fishing communities.

¨     The Killai project was implemented at a cost of ₹230.15 lakh through funding from the District Climate Change Mission and Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER).

¨     A major component of the project was the restoration of a 3-km stretch of the Buckingham Canal, completed on 14 March 2026.

¨     Restoration work included desilting and removal of plastic waste from the canal.

¨     The project also involved the removal of the invasive plant species Prosopis juliflora.

¨     More than 3,000 native mangrove saplings were planted in the project area.

¨     The village was equipped with solar panels on public buildings, solar street lights, solar parks, solar dryers, and solar-powered cold storage facilities.

¨     Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal plants that stabilize shorelines, retain sediment, and support biodiversity.

¨     Prosopis juliflora is an invasive alien plant species found in many dry and coastal regions of India.

¨     The Buckingham Canal is an artificial canal system extending through Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

¨     A Climate Resilient Village integrates climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihood support.

¨     The District Climate Change Mission is a district-level mechanism for implementing climate action plans in Tamil Nadu.

¨     Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) refers to private-sector support for environmental conservation and restoration projects.
