Ladakh approved 17 new tehsils

¨     Ladakh approved 17 new tehsils, increasing the total number of tehsils in the Union Territory from 15 to 32.

¨     The approval was given by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

¨     The decision includes the reorganisation of tehsils and revenue villages.

¨     A tehsil is a sub-district administrative and revenue unit in India.

¨     It is responsible for land records, revenue collection, and local administration.

¨     A tehsil functions below the district level.

¨     Each tehsil is headed by a Tehsildar.

Under the new administrative structure:

¨     Leh – 5 tehsils

¨     Kargil – 7 tehsils

¨     Changthang – 4 tehsils

¨     Nubra – 6 tehsils

¨     Zanskar – 4 tehsils

¨     Sham – 5 tehsils

¨     Drass – 1 tehsil

The restructuring is based on the recommendations of a Union Territory-level committee.Every revenue village will now fall under one tehsil, and every tehsil will belong to one district.The new mapping removes administrative and jurisdictional overlaps.A revenue village is the smallest unit in the land revenue system.It is used for maintaining land and tax records.Ladakh became a Union Territory on 31 October 2019 after the reorganisation of the former State of Jammu and Kashmir.In different states, tehsils are also known as talukas or mandals.Tehsildars are responsible for revenue administration, land records, and certain local regulatory functions.Changthang is a high-altitude plateau region in eastern Ladakh.
