National Statistical Office (NSO) has announced a nationwide migration survey from July 2026 to June 2027

¨     The National Statistical Office (NSO) has announced a nationwide migration survey from July 2026 to June 2027.  Due to rapid urbanization, labor mobility, and increasing seasonal migration across states, the government aims to generate updated and comprehensive migration data. The findings of this survey will guide future policy decisions related to urban planning, employment, housing, and social security, making this survey highly relevant for current affairs and competitive examinations.

What is the NSO Migration Survey

¨     This proposed survey aims to collect fresh and detailed data on migration patterns across India.

¨     It will gather information on rural-urban migration, inter-state movement, seasonal and return migration, and the reasons behind migration.

¨     Unlike general labor surveys, this dedicated initiative will provide a holistic picture of population mobility, encompassing the social, economic, and employment-related dimensions of migration.

Key areas to be covered by the survey

¨     Focusing on the volume and types of migration, such as who migrates, where they go, and why.

¨     Studying the employment profile of migrant workers, helping to understand how migration and job opportunities are linked.

¨     Paying special attention to temporary, circular, and seasonal migration, which is often underreported but plays a significant role in India's informal economy.
