The official name of
Kerala has been changed to Keralam.

The name change was
effected through the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Act, 2026.

Under this Act, the name
of the state was changed in the First Schedule of the Constitution of India.

The process of changing
Kerala's name was completed under Article 3 of the Constitution of India.

Article 3 empowers
Parliament to form new states and alter the names, areas, and boundaries of
existing states.

Before introducing such a
bill in Parliament, the President obtains the views of the concerned state
legislature.

The Union Cabinet
approved the proposal to change Kerala's name.
¨
The Kerala Legislative
Assembly accepted the proposal.
¨
Union Minister of State
for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill,
2026, in the Lok Sabha.

Both the Lok Sabha and
the Rajya Sabha passed the bill.
¨
President Droupadi Murmu
granted her assent to the bill.
¨
Subsequently, the law was
notified as the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Act, 2026.

This Act was notified as
Act No. 18 of 2026.

The Union Ministry of
Home Affairs issued a gazette notification setting August 25, 2026, as the date
for the Act to come into force.

From August 25, 2026, the
official name of Kerala became "Keralam".
