¨     Physicists at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, created a new exotic state of matter called the Fractional Fermi Sea on 3 July 2026.

¨     The experiment used approximately 70,000 cesium atoms.

¨     The atoms were cooled to temperatures of a few nanoKelvin.

¨     They were confined in one-dimensional (1D) tubes and subjected to repeated interaction cycles.

¨     The Fractional Fermi Sea is a new quantum state of matter formed under ultracold conditions.

¨     The research findings were published in Physical Review Letters.

¨     The quantum state was created using cesium atoms in a one-dimensional geometry.
