President Droupadi Murmu nominates former Deputy Chairman Harivansh to Rajya Sabha

¨   President Droupadi Murmu nominates former Deputy Chairman Harivansh to Rajya Sabha.

¨     President has nominated former Deputy Chairman of the Upper House (Council of States) Harivansh as a Rajya Sabha member.

¨   The tenure of Harivansh as a member of the Upper Houses ended on 9th April 2026.

¨    He has been nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha after the vacancy was created following the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

¨    Mr. Harivansh has completed his two terms as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Bihar.

¨     Under Article 80 of the Indian Constitution, the President nominates 12 members to the Rajya Sabha for six-year terms.

¨  These members are selected for their special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art, and social service.

¨     Nominated members have the same powers and privileges as elected members but cannot vote in Presidential elections.

¨     The first nominated woman member was Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale.

¨     The concept was borrowed from the Irish Constitution.
