Scientists in China have developed a new technology called ZC-DCFC

¨ Scientists in China have developed a new technology called ZC-DCFC (Zero-Carbon-Emission Direct Coal Fuel Cell).

¨     It has been developed by researchers at Shenzhen University.

¨     This technology can convert coal directly into electricity without burning it.

¨     It challenges the traditional belief that coal is always a major source of pollution.

¨     If successful at a large scale, it can enable clean energy production from coal.

¨     In conventional coal power plants, coal is burned to produce heat.

¨     The heat generates steam, which drives turbines to produce electricity.

¨     This process leads to high energy loss and significant CO₂ emissions.

¨     In ZC-DCFC, no combustion of coal takes place.

¨     Coal is placed in the anode chamber.

¨     Carbon reacts through an oxide membrane via a chemical process.

¨     This converts chemical energy directly into electrical energy.

¨     It eliminates the need for Thermal → Mechanical → Electrical conversion.

¨     Results in higher efficiency and low or zero carbon emissions.
