Mountain Tunnel Completed in Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Marks Major
Milestone

Union Railway Minister
Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the successful completion of the second mountain
tunnel of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project in Palghar district of
Maharashtra.
¨
This achievement is a
significant milestone for India's first high-speed bullet train corridor
connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
¨
The tunnel is 454 meters
long and 14.4 meters wide, allowing for the laying of rail tracks on both the
up and down lines.
¨
It was reported that the
construction of the second tunnel was completed within a month of the
completion of the first tunnel, which took place on January 2nd of this year.
¨
The Railway Minister
lauded the project team for maintaining the rapid pace of work on this
technologically advanced infrastructure project.
¨
It was reported that many
of the advanced construction technologies and heavy machinery used in the
project are being manufactured in India.
¨
Commercial operations on
the Gujarat section of the bullet train corridor are expected to begin next
year.
¨ There are plans to extend high-speed rail services to Thane by 2028.
¨ According to the estimated timeline, the entire MAHSR corridor is expected to reach Mumbai by 2029.
