Senior IPS officer Sibash Kabiraj was appointed as the new Gurugram Police Commissioner

¨     Senior IPS officer Sibash Kabiraj was appointed as the new Gurugram Police Commissioner on 18 May 2026.

¨     He is a 1999-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.

¨     He replaced Vikas Arora, who was posted as Additional Director General of Police (Administration), Panchkula.

¨     The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services created under Article 312 of the Constitution of India.

¨     IPS officers are recruited through the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

¨     The police commissionerate system is followed in several major Indian cities for urban policing and law-and-order administration.

¨     Under this system, the Police Commissioner generally exercises powers similar to those of a District Magistrate in policing matters, subject to state laws and administrative rules.

¨     Before his appointment in Gurugram, Sibash Kabiraj served as Commissioner of Police, Panchkula.

¨     In 2026, he also held additional charge as Additional Director General of Police (Cyber) and Director of the State Crime Records Bureau.
