Tamil Nadu approved five dedicated Renewable Energy Zones

¨     Tamil Nadu approved five dedicated Renewable Energy Zones on 19 June 2026.

¨ The zones were created under the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL).

¨     The purpose of these zones is to administer wind and solar power projects.

¨ The headquarters of the five zones are located in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

¨ The Chennai Zone covers the Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai electricity distribution circles.

¨  The Tiruchirappalli Zone covers the Tiruchirappalli, Villupuram, and Thanjavur distribution circles.

¨     The Tirunelveli Zone manages the Tirunelveli electricity distribution circle.

¨     The Coimbatore Zone manages the Coimbatore electricity distribution circle.

¨     The Madurai Zone covers the Karur, Erode, and Madurai distribution circles.

¨   Assistant Executive Engineers will head project administration and implementation in these zones.

¨  The zonal structure will facilitate project approvals, coordination, and power evacuation infrastructure for renewable energy projects.

¨ The arrangement also includes repowering of wind farms, which involves replacing or upgrading old wind turbines with newer and more efficient units.
