¨     Tamil Nadu recorded a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of 52.3% in higher education for the 2023–24 academic year.

¨     The figure was released in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023–24 report by the Union Government.

¨     With a GER of 52.3%, Tamil Nadu ranked first among all Indian states in higher education.

¨     Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) is the percentage of students enrolled in a particular level of education compared with the population of the official age group for that level.

¨     In India, higher education GER is calculated for the 18–23 years age group.

¨     Tamil Nadu’s GER (52.3%) was significantly higher than the national average of 30% in 2023–24.

Tamil Nadu’s higher education GER has shown steady growth:

¨     2021–22: 47.0%

¨     2022–23: 49.1%

¨     2023–24: 52.3%

The state has maintained a GER above 47% for three consecutive academic years.In 2023–24, the female GER was 53.1%, while the male GER was 51.6%.Tamil Nadu has recorded a higher female GER than male GER for the past three years.Out of 68.4 lakh youth aged 18–23 years, 35.8 lakh were enrolled in higher education.The state had 2,18,656 faculty members in higher education.This accounted for 12.6% of India’s total higher education teaching workforce.
