Tushar Mehta Gets Three-Year Extension as
Solicitor General of India

The Appointments
Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the re-appointment of Tushar Mehta as
the Solicitor General of India for a further term of three years.
¨
His new tenure will
commence on 1 July 2026.
¨
He will continue as the
second-highest law officer of the Union Government.
¨
The Solicitor General of
India (SGI) is the second-highest law officer after the Attorney General for
India.
¨
The Solicitor General
represents the Union Government in courts and provides legal advice on
important matters.
¨
The Union's law officer
system includes the Attorney General, Solicitor General, Additional Solicitors
General (ASGs), and other government counsel.
¨
The Appointments
Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approves appointments to several senior posts in
the Union Government.
¨
Tushar Mehta first
assumed office as Solicitor General in October 2018.
¨
On completion of his new
tenure, his total service as Solicitor General is expected to reach 11 years.
¨
The ACC also approved the
re-appointment of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) for the Supreme
Court for a period of three years.
¨
Vikramjit Banerjee and K.
M. Nataraj will begin their new terms on 1 July 2026.
¨
Suryaprakash V. Raju, N.
Venkataraman, and Aishwarya Bhati will begin their new terms on 30 June 2026.
