Uttarakhand Disaster Management Model Recognized at BRICS DRR Working Group Meeting

¨     Uttarakhand’s disaster management model received recognition at the 2nd Technical Meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group held in Puri, Odisha.

¨     The meeting was hosted under India’s chairship.

¨     Officials, technical experts, and policymakers from 11 BRICS member and partner countries participated in the event.

¨     The BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group serves as a technical platform for cooperation on disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and risk reduction.

¨     BRICS currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.

¨     Uttarakhand’s model features an Early Warning System, Rapid Response Mechanism, technology-enabled coordination, and rescue operations in difficult terrain.

¨     The model was showcased as an effective example of disaster management in mountainous and disaster-prone regions.

¨     Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority coordinates risk-reduction measures and inter-departmental response during emergencies.

¨     State Disaster Response Force operates in the state’s mountainous and disaster-prone areas, carrying out rescue and relief operations.

¨     The Silkyara Tunnel Rescue Operation was highlighted as a successful example of multi-agency coordination.

¨     The operation involved coordinated rescue efforts following the tunnel collapse incident in Uttarakhand.

¨     Uttarakhand’s disaster management framework was recognized as a best-practice model for disaster risk reduction and emergency response.
