• The Uttarakhand Government has approved the relocation of the Uttarakhand High Court from Nainital to Haldwani in August 2026. The decision is aimed at providing better infrastructure, accessibility and administrative convenience for the functioning of the High Court.

    New High Court Site

¨     Under the final executive order, a 30-hectare site at Lamachaur has been identified for the construction of the new High Court campus.

¨  The proposed site is located along the Haldwani–Rudrapur highway (NH-05), providing better road connectivity and easier access for lawyers, litigants, court staff and visitors.

    Why Haldwani?

¨     Haldwani is an important commercial and transportation hub of Uttarakhand and is situated in the Kathgodam–Haldwani region. Compared with Nainital's hilly terrain, Haldwani offers relatively easier accessibility and greater availability of land for developing a modern judicial complex.

¨     The relocation is expected to facilitate the development of a larger and better-equipped High Court campus, with adequate facilities for judicial and administrative activities.

    Significance of the Decision

The relocation could have several important implications

¨     Better accessibility for litigants and lawyers.

¨     Availability of a larger area for modern court infrastructure.

¨     Improved connectivity with other parts of Uttarakhand.

¨     Greater scope for future expansion of the High Court campus.

¨     Reduction in logistical difficulties associated with Nainital's mountainous location.

    Historical Context

¨     The Uttarakhand High Court was established in Nainital after the creation of Uttarakhand in 2000. Nainital has therefore remained the seat of the state's highest court since the formation of the state.

¨     The proposed shift to Haldwani represents a significant change in Uttarakhand's judicial and administrative infrastructure.

    Conclusion

¨     The Uttarakhand Government's decision to relocate the High Court from Nainital to Haldwani, along with the identification of a 30-hectare site at Lamachaur, is a major infrastructure and governance initiative.

¨     The new location is expected to provide improved connectivity and create greater opportunities for developing a modern judicial campus.
