V2V Communication Systems Proposed from
2028
¨
Ministry of Road
Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed making Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V)
communication systems mandatory to strengthen road safety and promote real-time
information exchange between vehicles.
¨
The Ministry has issued a
draft notification in this regard.
¨
As per the proposal, V2V
communication systems will be made mandatory in specified motor vehicles in a
phased manner from 1 October 2028.
¨
V2V technology will
enable one vehicle to share important information with other nearby vehicles.
¨
The system can provide
timely information about the position of nearby vehicles and potential road
hazards.
¨
V2V communication is
expected to help reduce the risk of road accidents and improve road safety.
¨
MoRTH had constituted a
task force to develop a framework for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), with
a special focus on Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication.
¨
The task force
recommended the adoption of 3GPP-based Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X)
technology.
¨
It also recommended the
use of the 5.875–5.925 GHz (5.9 GHz) spectrum band for V2X communication.
¨
The task force further
recommended an enabling regulatory framework for the implementation of V2V
technology.
¨
The Telecom Regulatory Authority
of India (TRAI) subsequently issued a consultation paper on the regulatory
framework for V2X communication.
¨
The TRAI consultation
covered key issues such as spectrum allocation, interoperability, licensing and
cybersecurity.
¨
The current draft notification
seeks to implement these policy initiatives through the phased deployment of
V2V communication systems in motor vehicles.
