Vishwesh Negi, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 2002 batch, was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran

¨     Vishwesh Negi, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2002 batch, was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran on 3 August 2026.

¨     He is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi.

¨     He is expected to assume his diplomatic assignment in Tehran shortly.

¨     India and Iran maintain diplomatic relations through their embassies in New Delhi and Tehran.

¨     The Ambassador of India to Iran heads the Indian mission in Tehran and represents India in bilateral political, economic, and consular affairs.

¨     West Asia includes countries such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman.

¨     India’s engagement with West Asia focuses on energy imports, trade, welfare of the Indian diaspora, maritime security, and regional connectivity projects.

¨     Chabahar Port is a seaport in south-eastern Iran, located on the Gulf of Oman.

¨     India considers Chabahar Port a strategic connectivity project to improve access to Afghanistan and Central Asia through Iran.
