Artemis II Mission: NASA's Major Step
Towards a Permanent Human Presence on the Moon
¨
The U.S. space agency,
NASA, is preparing for the Artemis II mission as a significant step in its
long-term plan to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon.
¨
In this mission, set to
launch soon, four astronauts will orbit the Moon, marking humanity's return to
the vicinity of the Moon—more than 50 years after the Apollo era.
Transition from Exploration to Long-Term
Presence
¨
Unlike the Apollo
missions of 1969–1972, which aimed for short-duration stays on the Moon, the
Artemis program aims to ensure a continuous human presence there. NASA's goal
is to develop a sustainable lunar base capable of supporting long-duration
stays.
¨
This shift reflects
advancements in space technology and the broader objective of utilizing the
Moon as a staging ground for deep-space exploration, including missions to
Mars.
Roadmap of the Artemis Program and
Missions
¨ The Artemis program began in 2022 with an uncrewed test flight. Artemis II will be the first crewed mission in this series, carrying astronauts around the Moon and returning them safely to Earth. Future missions will involve human landings and regular expeditions.
¨ NASA plans to conduct missions every six months, transporting astronauts, equipment, and supplies. These efforts will gradually build the necessary infrastructure for a permanent lunar habitat.
