COP31 co-presidency of Turkey and Australia proposed a global target to increase electricity’s share in final energy demand to 35% by 2035

¨     The COP31 co-presidency of Turkey and Australia proposed a global target to increase electricity’s share in final energy demand to 35% by 2035.

¨     The initiative is known as the “35×35” (35 by 35) Target.

¨     The proposal was announced by Murat Kurum and Chris Bowen during the Bonn Climate Change Conference.

¨     The goal aims to expand the role of clean electricity in global energy consumption.

¨     Final energy demand refers to the energy consumed directly by end users in sectors such as buildings, transport, and industry.

¨     Electricity currently accounts for approximately 20–23% of global final energy consumption.

¨     Under the “35×35” target, this share would increase to 35% by 2035.

¨     The proposal forms part of the COP31 Action Agenda.

¨     The Action Agenda is a collection of non-binding initiatives associated with the international climate process.

¨     Such initiatives do not require formal approval from all parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

¨  The target supports the transition from fossil fuels to clean electricity in buildings, transport, and industrial sectors.

¨  The proposal is backed by analysis from the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

¨     It is aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, particularly the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

¨   The “35×35” target is considered an important step toward global energy transition and decarbonization.
