Delhi-NCR Transport Unions Announce
Three-Day Strike Over Fare Hike and Fuel Price Issues
¨
Commercial transport
unions in Delhi-NCR announced a three-day strike from 21 to 23 May 2026.
¨
The strike was called
over demands for fare revision for taxis, auto-rickshaws, trucks, and goods
vehicles.
¨
The unions linked their
demands to rising prices of CNG, petrol, and diesel.
¨
Disputes related to
commercial vehicle regulations in Delhi also contributed to the protest.
¨
The Chalak Shakti Union
is among the major unions associated with the strike.
¨
All India Motor Transport
Congress is a national body that supported the demands raised by the unions.
¨
The unions demanded an
immediate increase in taxi and auto-rickshaw fares.
¨
They stated that
continuous increases in CNG, petrol, and diesel prices had raised the operating
costs of commercial drivers.
¨
The unions objected to
the pricing practices of app-based cab companies such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
¨
On 19 May 2026, the
unions submitted a formal representation to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit
Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
¨
Other transport unions
stated that the proposed strike for auto and taxi services had been put on
hold.
¨
They clarified that the
planned chakka jam from 21 to 23 May 2026 would apply only to truck and goods
vehicle operators.
¨ Truck and goods vehicle operators demanded withdrawal of the hike in the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) imposed on commercial vehicles entering Delhi.
¨ They also demanded rollback of the proposed ban on non-Delhi registered BS-IV commercial goods vehicles from 1 November 2026.
