Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has mandated a standardised vegan logo on approved vegan food packages from 1 July 2027

¨     Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has mandated a standardised vegan logo on approved vegan food packages from 1 July 2027.

¨     The requirement applies to products covered under the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026.

¨     These regulations amended the 2022 Vegan Food Regulations and were notified on 21 May 2026.

¨     Under FSSAI rules, vegan food is defined as food that is free from animal-derived ingredients, animal-derived additives, and animal-derived processing aids.

¨     The definition also includes products that do not involve animal testing, except where such testing is mandated by a regulatory authority.

¨     The official vegan logo consists of a green square-framed symbol featuring a stylised “V”, a sprouting leaf, and the word “VEGAN” below it.

¨     FSSAI has prescribed specific dimensions and design standards to ensure uniform labelling across vegan food products.

¨     Food Business Operators (FBOs) have been given a transition period until 1 July 2027 to comply with the revised packaging and labelling requirements.

¨     FBOs must maintain separate production lines for vegan and non-vegan products or implement thorough cleaning procedures when using shared equipment.

¨     These measures are intended to prevent cross-contamination between vegan and non-vegan food products.

¨     The regulations aim to improve transparency, consumer awareness, and standardisation in the vegan food sector in India.
