GMC Receives UNIDO's GEM Award 2026
¨
Guntur Municipal
Corporation (GMC) won the 4th Gender Equality Mobilization (GEM) Award by
UNIDO.
¨ The award was presented
in Vienna during the International Women’s Industry Day 2026 celebrations.
¨
Over 200 women were
employed as electric auto drivers for door-to-door waste collection.
¨
These women were
previously engaged in informal waste picking.
¨
Under the program, they
were identified, trained, and formally employed.
Project Highlights
¨
Implemented under UNIDO’s
Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SC-IAP).
¨
Promotes zero-emission
waste management through the use of electric vehicles.
¨
Creates green job
opportunities for women in the urban sanitation sector.
International Recognition
¨
The award was received by
Olga Rataj (UNIDO Project Manager) on behalf of GMC.
¨
The ceremony was attended
by former Finnish President Tarja Halonen and senior UNIDO officials.
¨ The initiative is
recognized globally as a strong example of women empowerment and sustainable
development.
