Haryana and Rajasthan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement

¨     Haryana and Rajasthan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 29 June 2026 in New Delhi to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement.

¨     The MoU deals with the allocation and transfer of Yamuna River water among the basin states under the Upper Yamuna framework.

¨     The Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement was signed on 12 May 1994 by five basin states.

¨     The agreement provides for the distribution of the surface flow of the Yamuna River among the participating states.

¨     Under the Yamuna Water Project, Rajasthan will receive its allocated share of Yamuna water.

¨     The project will use a 295.5-km dedicated underground pipeline for water transfer.

¨     The estimated cost of the project is ₹34,102 crore.

¨     A consensus on the water-sharing arrangement was reached on 23 June 2026 during a high-level meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil in New Delhi.

¨     The 9th meeting of the Upper Yamuna Review Committee, held in November 2025, had already reviewed the progress of the project for transferring Rajasthan’s share of Yamuna water.

¨     The MoU aims to strengthen inter-state water cooperation, ensure the equitable distribution of Yamuna water, and improve water resource management among the basin states.
