¨
ICAR–Central Coastal
Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), Goa organised a one-day workshop
titled “Carbon Pathshala: Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) for Farmers.”
¨
The workshop was held at
ICAR-KVK, Old Goa.
¨
The programme was
organised in collaboration with Core CarbonX Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad.
¨
The workshop was
conducted under a research project focusing on plantation-based systems,
biochar production, and carbon credit generation in the west coast region of
India.
¨
The Voluntary Carbon
Market (VCM) is a system where carbon credits are bought and sold outside
mandatory compliance mechanisms.
¨
Generally, one carbon
credit represents one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) reduced,
removed, or avoided through a verified project.
¨
Carbon sequestration
refers to the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon in biomass, soil, or
other carbon reservoirs.
¨
Biochar is a carbon-rich
material produced by heating organic matter under limited oxygen conditions.
¨
Biochar is used for soil
management and carbon storage.
¨
The “Carbon Pathshala”
initiative aimed to familiarise farmers with carbon sequestration, voluntary
carbon markets, and biochar-based carbon credits.
¨
The workshop highlighted
the potential of carbon-credit participation as an additional source of income
for farmers.
¨
Dr. Parveen Kumar,
Director of ICAR-CCARI, emphasised the potential of carbon credits to create an
additional income stream for farmers.
