¨  India abstained on 20 May 2026 in a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on climate change obligations.

¨ The resolution was adopted with 141 votes in favour, 8 against, and 28 abstentions.

¨  The resolution referred to the July 2025 advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on states’ legal obligations regarding climate change.

¨     The United Nations General Assembly is the main deliberative body of the United Nations.

¨     UNGA adopts resolutions on international issues and global policies.

¨     UNGA resolutions are generally non-binding but reflect the position of member states on international law and policy matters.

¨     The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

¨     ICJ issues advisory opinions on legal questions referred by UN bodies.

¨     In July 2025, the ICJ issued an advisory opinion on climate change obligations of states.

¨     This advisory opinion was cited in the UNGA resolution adopted on 20 May 2026.

¨     The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is the core multilateral treaty for climate negotiations.

¨     It was adopted in 1992 and came into force in 1994.

¨     The principle of “Common but Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR)” is a recognised principle under the UNFCCC framework.

¨     CBDR is used in negotiations related to emissions, climate finance, and adaptation responsibilities.
