¨     On 21 May 2026, India raised Pakistan’s record of alleged genocidal acts during the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict.

¨     India’s statement was delivered by Harish Parvathaneni, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

¨     The statement came after Pakistan raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during the same debate.

United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

¨     The UNSC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations.

¨     It consists of 15 member countries.

¨     The Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

¨     The UNSC regularly conducts open debates on issues such as civilian protection, armed conflict, and global security.

Operation Searchlight and the 1971 War

¨     Operation Searchlight was a military operation launched by the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan in March 1971.

¨     Following the 1971 war, East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh.

¨     The conflict remains an important reference point in South Asian history and international relations.

UNAMA and Civilian Harm in Afghanistan

¨     The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was established in 2002 as a UN political mission.

¨    UNAMA reported 750 civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan during the first three months of 2026 due to cross-border armed violence.

¨     It attributed 94 out of 95 such incidents to Pakistani security forces.
