Indian Railways has achieved a significant
milestone by launching India's first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train
• Indian
Railways has achieved a significant milestone by launching India's first
LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train. This train was operated from Sabarmati Station
in Ahmedabad, marking a major step towards sustainable and environmentally
friendly rail operations.
• This
initiative aligns with Indian Railways' goal of reducing pollution, lowering
fuel costs, and adopting cleaner energy solutions.
What is an LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train?
• DEMU
(Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) trains are typically used for short-distance
passenger services. In this new model, the DEMU train has been upgraded to a
dual-fuel system, utilizing both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel.
• The
train's 1,400 horsepower (HP) driving power cars have been converted to run on
both diesel and LNG. Approximately 40% of the diesel is replaced with LNG,
making the train more fuel-efficient and cleaner.
