¨     Jnanpith Award 2025 will be conferred on Tamil Poet and Lyricist R. Vairamuthu.

¨     The 60th Jnanpith Award for the year 2025 has been announced to be conferred on distinguished Tamil poet, lyricist, and writer R. Vairamuthu.

¨     The award has been given in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Tamil literature marked by creative depth and a distinctive poetic voice

¨     The decision was taken by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Selection Committee chaired by noted writer Pratibha Ray along with eminent scholars and litterateurs.

¨     The award carries a cash prize of ₹11 lakh, a bronze statuette of Goddess Saraswati, and a citation, and is presented annually for outstanding literary contribution.

¨     R. Vairamuthu is regarded as one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Tamil literature, known for portraying human emotions, social issues, and nature with sensitivity.

¨     Over a literary career spanning more than four decades, significant contributions have been made by him across poetry, lyrics, and prose.

¨     He has authored more than 37 books, including notable works such as “Kallikattu Ethikasam,” “Karuvachi Kaaviyam,” “Thanni Desam,” and “Moondraam Ullaga Por”.

¨     Several prestigious honours have been received by him, including the National Film Award for Best Lyrics on seven occasions.

¨     He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014 by the Government of India.
