Maharashtra’s CBG Policy 2026: Boost to
Clean Energy and Waste Management
¨ The Maharashtra
government has approved the Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy 2026 to promote
clean energy and scientific waste management.
¨ The decision was taken by
the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
¨ The policy aims to
convert organic waste into clean fuel while supporting climate goals and a
circular economy.
¨
An allocation of ₹500
crore has been made for the financial year 2026–27.
¨ Projects will be supported
under PPP (Public-Private Partnership) and Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
¨ The objective is to
reduce financial risks and accelerate large-scale CBG plant development across
the state.
¨ Maharashtra’s 423 urban
local bodies generate large amounts of municipal solid waste daily.
¨ The policy emphasizes
source-level waste segregation and scientific processing of wet waste.
¨
Organic waste will be
converted into biogas, reducing the burden on landfills.
¨
It will also help cut
methane emissions, a major contributor to global warming.
¨ The policy promotes the
use of agricultural residues, benefiting farmers and reducing stubble burning.
¨
It supports a sustainable
“waste-to-wealth” model.
