Min Aung Hlaing has been elected President of Myanmar through a parliamentary process

¨     Min Aung Hlaing has been elected President of Myanmar through a parliamentary process.

¨     This marks his formal transition from military leadership to the role of Head of State.

¨     He has effectively governed the country since the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état.

¨     This coup ousted the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

¨  The vote for the presidency took place in Naypyidaw. The legislature involved in this process is dominated by military-backed members.

¨     Ye Win Oo has been appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

¨  He replaces Min Aung Hlaing in the army's top post. Min Aung Hlaing had held the position of Commander-in-Chief since 2011.

¨   These changes in leadership follow several years of military rule in the aftermath of the coup.

¨       During this period, elected leaders were detained, and democratic institutions in Myanmar were significantly weakened or dismantled.
