NITI Aayog's Draft Plan to Make Andhra Pradesh a Top Renewable Energy Hub by 2035

NITI Aayog unveiled a draft plan aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India's top three renewable energy hubs by 2035. The strategy was presented by NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam to the state's Chief Secretary under the ASSET (Accelerating Sustainable State Energy Transition) platform.

Key Points

¨     Clean Energy Transition: The plan envisions making Andhra Pradesh a leading producer and exporter of renewable energy by 2035.

¨     The plan is consistent with India's broader efforts towards energy security, carbon emission reduction, economic growth, and climate change, and supports national goals, including the target of 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

¨     Energy affordability and efficiency: NITI Aayog estimates that power purchase costs could fall to ₹3.90–4 per unit, while total supply costs will remain below ₹6 per unit.

¨     Transmission modernization: An investment of ₹65,000–70,000 crore has been earmarked for transmission upgrades, including green energy corridors, GIS substations, and HVDC lines.

¨     Energy war room: A dedicated monitoring room will be set up to monitor the progress of these initiatives.

¨     Timeline: The plan is expected to be finalized by early March 2026, and implementation is likely to begin by the middle of the same month.
