Recently, President of Finland Alexander Stubb paid an official visit to India from March 4 to 7, 2026. Following high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two countries elevated their bilateral relations to the level of a "Strategic Partnership in Digitalization and Sustainability."

¨     This was President Alexander Stubb's first visit to India as President, during which he visited New Delhi and Mumbai with a high-level delegation of Finnish ministers and business leaders.

¨     He also participated as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker at the Raisina Dialogue 2026.

Highlights of the Visit

¨     Bilateral Relations Upgraded: India-Finland relations were elevated to the level of a "Strategic Partnership in Digitalization and Sustainability." This will focus on technology, clean energy, digital governance, and innovation ecosystems.

Agreements Signed: Three important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed:

¨     Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement: (for skilled workers, students, and professionals). • Environmental Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding. Cooperation in Official Statistics.

¨     Trade and Economic Cooperation: Both sides have set a target to double bilateral trade by 2030, leveraging the opportunities presented by the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (India-EU FTA) negotiations. Business engagement through the India-Finland Business Summit held in Mumbai. Cooperation in the startup ecosystem through initiatives such as the India-Finland Startup Corridor, including participation in Slush (Helsinki) and Startup Mahakumbh (New Delhi).

Technology and Innovation Partnership: Key areas identified include:

¨     5G and 6G telecommunications

¨     Artificial intelligence and quantum computing

¨     Semiconductors and high-performance computing

¨     Cross-sectoral joint working groups on digitization

¨     Establishment of a joint task force on 6G involving the India 6G Alliance and the University of Oulu.

¨     Launch of a joint research call under the collaboration between India's Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Business Finland.

Cooperation in Space Technology: Ongoing collaboration includes:

¨     The networks of the Finnish telecommunications company Nokia are widely used in India.

¨     ​​Collaboration between the India 6G Alliance and the University of Oulu.

Sustainability and Climate Cooperation:

¨     Collaboration in clean energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, smart grids, and the circular economy.

¨     India will host the 'World Circular Economy Forum 2026', a Finnish initiative.

¨     Cooperation in water management, meteorology, and climate research.

Education and Public Relations

¨     Expand cooperation in teacher training, higher education, and research collaboration.

¨     Finland is emerging as a preferred destination for Indian students and skilled professionals.

Multilateral and Strategic Cooperation

¨     Finland supported a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and India's permanent membership.

¨     Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and multilateralism.
