Shaikha Lake Declared India’s 99th Ramsar Site

¨     Shaikha Lake Bird Sanctuary, located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has been declared India’s 99th Ramsar site.

¨     This marks another significant step in wetland conservation efforts in the country.

¨   With this addition, Uttar Pradesh now has 12 Ramsar sites, the highest among all Indian states.

¨ Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted its importance for biodiversity, climate security, water conservation, and local livelihoods.

¨     The recognition brings India closer to achieving 100 Ramsar sites, a major environmental milestone.

Importance of Shaikha Lake

¨     It is one of the most important wetlands in western Uttar Pradesh.

¨     The lake attracts a large number of migratory birds during winter.

¨     It lies on the Central Asian Flyway, one of the world’s major bird migration routes.
