Collegium is the body responsible for recommending appointments and transfers
of judges in India’s higher judiciary.

It is headed by the Chief
Justice of India and comprises the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.
The four High Court Chief Justices
recommended for elevation are:

Punjab and Haryana High Court

Justice Shree
Chandrashekhar – Bombay High Court
¨
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva
– Madhya Pradesh High Court

Justice Arun Palli –
Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court
V. Mohana was also recommended for appointment as a
judge of the Supreme Court.The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill,
2026 increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court.The total number of
judges was raised from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.The
amendment followed an ordinance promulgated on 16 May 2026.The increase in
judicial strength aims to reduce the backlog of cases and improve the
efficiency of the Supreme Court.
