• ¨     Three new species of cascade frogs were reported from Northeast India and West Bengal.

¨     The findings were published on 12 August 2026 in the peer-reviewed Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology.

¨     The study was led by Prof. S. D. Biju of the Department of Environmental Studies, University of Delhi.

¨     Researchers studied more than 300 geographic populations of cascade frogs.

¨     The study used DNA analysis, morphological comparison, and field surveys for species identification.

¨     Cascade frogs belong to the genus Amolops.

¨     These frogs are adapted to fast-flowing forest streams, rocky watercourses, and humid forest habitats.

The three newly identified species are:

¨     Ammachi’s Cascade Frog (Amolops ammachi)

¨     Sendenyu Cascade Frog (Amolops sendenyu)

¨     Beautiful Cascade Frog (Amolops bella)

Amolops ammachi was discovered in the Jampui Hills of Tripura.Amolops ammachi was named after Padmini Varkey, popularly known as Ammachi.Amolops sendenyu was recorded from Nagaland and named after Sendenyu Village.Amolops bella was recorded from West Bengal.Amolops bella has a green body with yellowish-green or reddish-brown mosaic patterns. The identification of the new species was based on evidence from DNA, adult frogs, and tadpoles. The study highlights the rich amphibian diversity of the Eastern Himalaya and adjoining regions.
