US Imposes Heavy Anti-Dumping Duties on
Indian Solar Imports
¨ US has imposed a 123.04%
anti-dumping duty on solar cells and modules imported from India.
¨
When combined with
countervailing duties, the total tariff exceeds 234%.
¨
This move creates major
challenges for Indian solar manufacturers.
¨ It is part of the US
strategy to protect its domestic solar industry and reduce dependence on cheap
imports from Asia.
US Announcement
¨
The US Department of
Commerce announced the decision on April 23, 2026.
¨
It stated that Indian
solar products were being sold below fair value (dumping) in the US market.
¨
Based on this, a 123.04%
preliminary anti-dumping duty was imposed.
¨
Similar duties were
imposed on Indonesia (35.17%) and Laos (22.46%).
Reason for Investigation
¨ The probe began in July
2025 after a petition by the Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and
Trade.
¨
This group represents US
companies like First Solar and Qcells.
Understanding Anti-Dumping &
Countervailing Duties
¨
Anti-dumping duty is
imposed when imported goods are sold at unfairly low prices.
¨
These prices may be lower
than production cost or domestic market prices.
¨
Such practices harm local
industries.
¨
Purpose: to ensure fair
competition, not to ban imports.
