Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the Sharda River Corridor Project in Champawat. The project aims to beautify the riverbank, promote tourism, and develop better public amenities for local residents. The project will include the construction of ghats, walkways, green spaces, lighting, and other infrastructure. The government believes this will boost tourism and the local economy in Champawat. The project aims to promote economic activities, religious tourism, and employment generation in the border district.

Foundation stone laid in Tankapur

¨     Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Sharda Corridor was one of the key promises made during the election campaign and will play a vital role in the development of Champawat.

¨     Addressing a public gathering, he said that the project will boost tourism, encourage cultural initiatives, and create new livelihood opportunities, especially for local youth.

¨     The Sharda River flows along the India-Nepal border in Uttarakhand. Champawat district is part of the Kumaon region. River corridor projects integrate tourism and infrastructure development. The Purnagiri Mela is a major religious fair in Uttarakhand.

Investment Scale and Project Components

¨     The Sharda River Corridor Project will cover approximately 200 square kilometers in Champawat district, with a total proposed investment of approximately ₹3,300 crore.

¨     Under the first phase, the Chief Minister inaugurated the redevelopment of Sharda Ghat at a cost of ₹10.7 crore and the first phase of the drainage system for Tanakpur town at a cost of ₹66 crore.

¨     He also inaugurated a helipad and a multi-storey parking facility in Chuka to improve regional connectivity and urban infrastructure.

Tourism, Adventure, and Cultural Centers

¨     Under the corridor plan, the state government has proposed facilities for adventure tourism, including river rafting and paragliding on the Sharda River. Dhami said that efforts are also underway to extend the current three-month duration of the Purnagiri Fair, with the aim of attracting tourists throughout the year and ensuring sustainable economic activity in the region.

Heritage Conservation in Uttarakhand

¨     The Chief Minister said that the state government has prioritized the conservation and development of cultural and religious heritage sites.

¨     He cited ongoing initiatives in Devidhura, Bageshwar, Jageshwar, Patal Bhuvaneshwar, and the Golju Temple in Champawat as examples.

¨     According to Dhami, the Sharda Corridor will further strengthen these efforts by linking heritage conservation with modern infrastructure and sustainable tourism development.
