Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded India’s lowest Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 0.9 in the National Family Health Survey-6

¨     Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded India’s lowest Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 0.9 in the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6).

¨     NFHS-6 covers data for 2023–24 and was released on 29 May 2026.

¨     The TFR of 0.9 is well below the replacement level fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman.

¨     India’s overall TFR in NFHS-6 is 1.9.

¨     Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the average number of children a woman is expected to have during her reproductive years, generally between the ages of 15 and 49.

¨   In population studies, a TFR of 2.1 is considered the replacement level required to maintain a stable population size.
