Archaeologists announced
the discovery of a prehistoric cave in northern Israel.

The cave is located near
Fureidis, south of Haifa.

It dates back to
400,000–250,000 years ago.
¨ The site belongs to the Acheulo-Yabrudian
culture of the late Lower Paleolithic period.
¨ The excavation is a joint
project of the Israel Antiquities Authority and the University of Haifa.

Researchers associated
with the site include Dr. Kobi Vardi, Amit Gabbay, and Prof. Ron Shimelmitz.
¨ Archaeologists discovered
flint tools, including small handaxes, scrapers, and blades.
¨ Animal remains found at the site include fallow deer, gazelle, ancient horses, wild cattle, and donkeys.
