Delhi Launches Aftercare Scheme for Youth
Leaving Child Care Institutions

Rekha Gupta launched the
Aftercare Scheme for youth on 10 May 2026.
¨
The Delhi government
allocated ₹3.5 crore for the scheme in the financial year 2026–27.
¨
The scheme is meant for
youth leaving child care institutions and orphanages after attaining 18 years
of age.
¨
It operates under the
Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2015.
¨
The Department of Women
and Child Development, Delhi, will implement the scheme.
¨
The objective of the
scheme is to support young adults in achieving independent living.
¨
Eligible beneficiaries
will receive support for higher education.
¨
Assistance will also be
provided for skill development and vocational training programmes.
¨
The scheme includes
internship and employment opportunities.
¨
Beneficiaries will
receive a monthly stipend under the scheme.
¨
Mentorship, counselling,
and career guidance will also be provided.
¨
Rehabilitation support
forms an important component of the programme.
¨
Beneficiaries will be
selected through a need-based assessment process.
¨
An individual care plan
will be prepared for every eligible beneficiary.
¨
A State-Level Child Care
Committee will function under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Women
and Child Development Department.
¨
The committee will
oversee policy formulation, monitoring, and supervision.
¨
District-level committees
will also function under the scheme.
¨
Delhi has 88 child care
institutions.
¨
Around 150–200 youth
leave these institutions every year.
¨ Delhi also has two aftercare homes — one for boys and one for girls.
¨ These homes provide accommodation, food, and educational support to persons above 18 years of age.
