Delhi Launches Aftercare Scheme for Youth Leaving Child Care Institutions

¨     Rekha Gupta launched the Aftercare Scheme for youth on 10 May 2026.

¨     The Delhi government allocated ₹3.5 crore for the scheme in the financial year 2026–27.

¨     The scheme is meant for youth leaving child care institutions and orphanages after attaining 18 years of age.

¨     It operates under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2015.

¨     The Department of Women and Child Development, Delhi, will implement the scheme.

¨     The objective of the scheme is to support young adults in achieving independent living.

¨     Eligible beneficiaries will receive support for higher education.

¨     Assistance will also be provided for skill development and vocational training programmes.

¨     The scheme includes internship and employment opportunities.

¨     Beneficiaries will receive a monthly stipend under the scheme.

¨     Mentorship, counselling, and career guidance will also be provided.

¨     Rehabilitation support forms an important component of the programme.

¨     Beneficiaries will be selected through a need-based assessment process.

¨     An individual care plan will be prepared for every eligible beneficiary.

¨     A State-Level Child Care Committee will function under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department.

¨     The committee will oversee policy formulation, monitoring, and supervision.

¨     District-level committees will also function under the scheme.

¨     Delhi has 88 child care institutions.

¨     Around 150–200 youth leave these institutions every year.

¨     Delhi also has two aftercare homes — one for boys and one for girls.

¨     These homes provide accommodation, food, and educational support to persons above 18 years of age.
